ProjectFocus Hawai’i Presents

“Reflections: In Their Words”

When a loved one suffers a medical catastrophe (regardless of its level of severity), or is simply in need of assisted care because of a medically fragile state or aging issues, family members often turn to residential care facilities for help and guidance.

This year, when ProjectFocus Hawai`i shifted its emphasis from providing photographic internships to at-risk children, to those whose lives have been altered due to medical conditions ranging from ventilator-dependency to skilled nursing care, The Care Center of Honolulu was selected as its 2014 beneficiary.

Twelve residents from The Care Center of Honolulu were selected to participate in this yearʻs photographic exhibit titled, “Reflections. In their Words.” The participants range in age from 45 to 100 and were photographed by professional photographers and ProjectFocus Hawaiʻi co-founders Lisa Uesugi and Laurie Breeden Callies. High school students conducted participant interviews and over a period of several months, their compelling and inspiring stories were woven together to form the basis for the photographic narratives. Significant moments and stories about the impact others have had on them were shared –sometimes with tears, sometimes with laughter. We were deeply touched by our participantsʻ insight, wisdom, courage, and strength to persevere in the face of adversity.

The Care Center of Honolulu has been a part of our community for over 35 years. It provides a range of services including short-term rehabilitation, intermediate care and skilled nursing and was the first sub-acute unit in the state of Hawaii to care for ventilator-dependent individuals. It is now the largest respiratory care unit in the state.
