Diagnosis: Complications from Caesarean Section

Lisa Uesugi, Photographer

Shawnalynn is a nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Kapi‘olani Medical Center. In 2011, she was admitted to Kapi‘olani to give birth to her daughter. After a difficult labor, Shawnalynn gave birth by Caesarean section. She experienced complications after her surgery and was rushed back to the operating room as a “Code Crimson.” Shawnalynn was hemorrhaging and required blood transfusions. “I was very frightened because the doctors told me I might have a hysterectomy if they couldn’t stop the bleeding,” said Shawnalynn. “Thanks to the staff’s quick action that did not happen.” Shawnalynn is feeling great now and enjoys spending time with her daughter, Sophia. According to Shawnalynn, “I am so proud to be part of Kapi‘olani, not only as a nurse, but also as a patient. I want people to know that Kapi‘olani not only provides excellent pediatric care, but they also provide exceptional care for women.”
