Diagnosis: Gynecologic Cancer

Martha Smith is a familiar face at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, serving as its chief executive officer. In 2010, after a routine surgery, Martha learned she had gynecologic cancer. “All of my life, I have worked at staying strong and fit, and I was not going to let cancer change that,” said Martha. “There are millions of people living with cancer or other chronic illnesses and I was not going to let my diagnosis define me.” According to Martha, the ongoing care and treatment she received from the doctors and nurses at Kapi‘olani has been amazing. “It was hard to be a patient where I work and I felt vulnerable,” she said. “Everyone treated me with a great deal of respect and kindness and I’m sure I made them nervous! Their support meant the world to me and absolutely made a difference in my recovery.” Today, Martha is feeling great and still enjoys staying fit by running and playing golf. “I have never felt better or stronger,” said Martha. “There is so much to look forward to and no matter what happens, I believe that you have to enjoy each and every day to the fullest.”
