One morning in 2009, four-year-old Gigi was having breakfast with her older sister. Without warning, Gigi grabbed her head and screamed in pain. She was lethargic and bleeding from her nose. Her parents, Cal and Laura, rushed her to the emergency room. Blood tests revealed that Gigi had less than a third of normal blood volume and it was determined that Gigi had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Gigi was transferred that evening to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. According to her parents, “Dr. Wade Kyono, Gigi’s oncologist, explained that ‘If you have to be a kid with leukemia, this is the type you want to have.’ We knew at that point that Gigi was in good hands and we trusted that she would be okay.” Gigi is now cancer-free and cured. Gigi attends Noelani Elementary School and enjoys dancing, playing the piano, reading and drawing.
