Diagnosis: Ovarian Cancer

Lisa Uesugi, Photographer

In December 2011, Leila learned that she had a tumor in her uterus and needed surgery. After the surgery, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Leila, a retired nurse, considered herself to be healthy and kept active with daily activities, so she was shocked to hear that she had cancer. “It was really tough being in the hospital for long periods of time and the treatments were difficult,” said Leila. “Despite everything, having cancer taught me that life is precious and that I need to enjoy the rest of my life spending time with my husband.” Today, Leila is healthy and happy, going on daily walks and playing golf whenever possible. Leila is grateful to the wonderful doctors and staff at Kapi‘olani for taking care of her during her illness. “They have become my family,” said Leila.
