Devin was born unexpectedly at 25 weeks, weighed less than two pounds and was only 13 inches in length. He stayed in Kapi‘olani Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for three months and was on a ventilator for eight weeks. During that time, Devin had several surgeries to repair his heart (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) and a hernia, and had to fight infections of the lungs, blood and bladder. When he was finally discharged, he came home with oxygen and several monitors. Today, Devin is a normal, healthy teen attending Le Jardin Academy. He enjoys dodge ball, traveling and hanging out with his friends. According to his mom, Donna, “Having a premature baby isn’t easy but I want other preemie parents to know that there is hope!” Donna is a volunteer with the March of Dimes and is frequently seen at Kapi‘olani, providing support to other parents of preemies.
